How to Play Which Country Is Bigger?

Choose the place with the larger area. Then watch the maps rescale to show the difference.

Make your first choice

Tap either map card, or use the left and right arrow keys. The place names are given, so you do not need to identify the outlines. Before you answer, each shape fits its own card: its display size is not a clue.

After your choice, you see the larger place, both approximate areas and their ratio. There is no timer or speed bonus. Select Next comparison when you are ready.

Choose how you want to play

  • Daily atlas: ten questions in the world, US, Japan, Brazil or mainland China game. The next set starts at 00:00 UTC. Finishing counts toward your local daily streak, whatever your score.
  • Five-question practice: a short round for Canada, Australia, each continent and Home vs the world. Wrong answers do not end the round, and there is no daily deadline.
  • Endless: keep going until your third incorrect answer. The size gap adjusts to your recent answers. Your best score is personal, not a global ranking.
  • Review: open My progress to revisit up to ten recently missed pairs from the current game. Review does not change your daily result.

Players starting the current version of the same daily game get the same questions and order. A round already in progress keeps its original set, even after midnight. When a new daily is available, choose Play today to start it, or finish your current round first.

Compare your region with a country

In Home vs the world, use Your familiar place below the game to select a state, province or prefecture, or mix the available regions. Every pair contains one home region and one country or selected territory. The home region’s parent country is excluded.

The question is which place has more area, not whether one outline would physically fit inside the other. Choose a home-region game.

Share the question, not the answer

Send this question shares the exact two places without revealing which is larger. At the end of a fixed round, Copy result includes your score, a spoiler-free pattern and a link to the same questions in the same order. You can also open a social platform directly and add your own thoughts before posting.

Endless results invite friends to start their own endless run with three chances. Questions adapt to each player, so these are personal records, not identical head-to-head challenges. Shared scores are self-reported.

For an image, open More, then Score card. Save a card and add the playable link to your caption. An Endless link opens another adaptive run, not a fixed set of matching questions.

Can I pick up where I left off?

Yes. When browser storage is available, switching modes or refreshing keeps your progress, including the answer you just revealed. Endless shows your current correct answers and your personal best. Use Start a new run below the game when you want a fresh start; unfinished runs ask for confirmation. Progress stays in this browser, not across devices.

What the map reveal means

We compare approximate areas calculated from map boundaries, not population. The reveal makes the filled shapes proportional to those areas. Our figures can differ from official land-area and total-area statistics. Read the map and data notes for the calculation and coverage.

Play at your own pace

No account, sound effects or paid retries are needed. Animations respect your device’s reduced-motion setting. Progress stays in this browser and may disappear if you clear site data or use private browsing.
